Chief Investigator: Dr Mervyn Jackson

What does my participation involve?

1. Introduction

Thank you for your interest in this research project. You are invited to take part in this research project, which is called “Extending the Theory of Planned Behaviour via Positive and Negative Reinforcement to Better Understand Alcohol Use Disorder”. Your involvement will help us better understand problematic alcohol use.

Participation in this research is voluntary. If you decide you want to take part in the research project, you will be asked to click on the “I consent” button at the end of this form. By clicking on the “I consent” button you are telling us that you:

• Understand what you have read
• Consent to take part in the research project

2. What is the purpose of this research?

Alcohol misuse is prevalent in the adult population (18+) and, as yet there is no comprehensive model explaining problematic alcohol use. Past studies have examined attitudes, societal norms, perceptions of control, and drinking motives separately with mixed results. This study combines these elements to build a different model of alcohol use that may assist researchers and clinicians to develop improved treatment programs.

3. What does participation in this research involve?

You will be asked to complete a questionnaire that takes no longer than 10 minutes. The questionnaire asks you to reflect on your drinking behaviour and motives over the last 12 months.

4. Do I have to take part in this research project?

Participation in any research project is voluntary. If you do not wish to take part, you do not have to. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to withdraw from the project at any stage.

5. What are the possible benefits of taking part?

We cannot guarantee or promise that you will receive any benefits from this research. However, possible benefits may include contributing to a body of empirical evidence, which may lead to improved alcohol treatment programs in the future.

6. What are the risks and disadvantages of taking part?

You may feel that some of the questions are stressful or upsetting. Please consider the contact information below if you would like support/counselling services.
No personal information will be collected in the survey so none will be stored as data. Once we have completed our data collection and analysis, we will import the data to the RMIT server where it will be stored securely for seven years. The data on the host server will then be deleted.

7. What if I withdraw from this research project?

If you do consent to participate, you may withdraw at any time. If you decide to withdraw from the project, please exit the online survey.

8. What will happen to information about me?

By clicking on the consent button below, you consent to the research team collecting and using information from you for the research project. All information that you provide to use is anonymous and cannot be traced back to you.

9. Who has reviewed the research project?

This research project has been approved by the RMIT University HREC.
This project will be carried out according to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007). This statement has been developed to protect the interests of people who agree to participate in human research studies.
